How Pfizer Started
Pfizer's history started in 1849 with cousins Charles Pfizer and Charles Erhart. Charles Pfizer was a chemist, and Charles Erhart was a confectioner. They began a partnership in Brooklyn to manufacture bulk chemicals.
The name of their company was Charles Pfizer & Company. Charles Pfizer loaned money from his father to start the company.

The two cousins, Charles Pfizer(left) and Charles Erhart(right), were the founders of Charles Pfizer & Company
Their first product was an anti-parasitic drug that tasted like toffee. It united Pfizer's skills as a chemist with Erhart's training as a confectioner.
They also produced iodine, boric, and tartaric acids. Pfizer pioneered the production of citric acid. It's a substance that Pfizer still markets to soft drink companies. They did that by using large-scale fermentation technology.
It was this expertise that launched Pfizer into the pharmaceutical industry.
How The Discovery Of Penicillin Launched Pfizer Into The Pharmaceutical Industry
In 1928, Sir Alexander Fleming discovered penicillin. Scientists struggled for years to produce a high-quality and large drug quantity. During World War II, there was a need for penicillin.
The government approached Pfizer because of its expertise in fermentation. Early production was not without its problems. The first yields of penicillin required constant supervision.
By 1942, Pfizer divided the first penicillin bottle for the Army and Navy. It had a value of $150,000. Mass production began in 1944. Pfizer's penicillin arrived with the Allied forces on the beaches of Normandy on D-Day.
The public asked Pfizer to release the drug domestically. In 1943, Pfizer supplied penicillin to a doctor at the Brooklyn Jewish Hospital.
It was not until the end of the war that the government stopped restricting the drug. In 1946, Pfizer purchased the Groton Victory Yard. It was a World War II shipyard the company used for mass production.
This period was Pfizer's first official entrance into the manufacturing of pharmaceuticals. In a few years, Pfizer produced enough penicillin to supply 85% of the nation and 50% of the world. In 1946, sales reached $43 million.
Competition from 20 other companies manufacturing penicillin soon resulted in severe price reductions. The price for 100,000 units dropped from $20 to less than two cents.
Pfizer's other breakthrough came with the discovery of oxytetracycline.
Pfizer's First Big Hit
Pfizer's created oxytetracycline. It was an antibiotic that soon would prove effective against many diseases. The drug made Pfizer one of the top industry competitors.
Pfizer became successful at developing a diversified line of drugs. The company borrowed research from its competitors and released variants of these drugs.

Pfizer developed these drugs and seized a share of the market. The company reduced its dependence on antibiotics sales by selling other drugs.
Pfizer also went into the foreign market, expanding into 100 countries. By 1965, it was one of the largest pharmaceutical manufacturers in the United States.
Between 1961 and 1965, the company acquired 14 companies. The acquisition included manufacturers of vitamins, antibiotics for animals, chemicals, and cosmetics.
Pfizer also spread to more markets worldwide.
Pfizer Expanded Into More Than 140 Countries
In 1970, the company changed its name to the more modern-sounding Pfizer Inc. By 1983, sales reached $3.5 billion. Pfizer spent one of the largest amounts of money in the industry on research.
By 1989, Pfizer operated businesses in more than 140 countries. Pfizer International launched 37 new products worldwide in 1990.

The company's antifungal drug, Diflucan, became the world's leading drug. Sales of Pfizer's latest products accounted for 30% of all pharmaceutical sales.
Pfizer entered into a series of partnerships with smaller pharmaceutical firms. The firms liked Pfizer's powerful sales force. In 1997, Pfizer helped Warner-Lambert bring Lipitor, a cholesterol-lowering pill, to market.
Lipitor soared to the top of the anti-cholesterol niche in the United States. It achieved sales of $865 million in 1997 and $2.2 billion in 1998.
Another 1997 introduction of a comarketed drug was Aricept. Japan's Eisai developed it and became the leading drug to treat Alzheimer's. In June 2000, the company took over Warner-Lambert.
During the years, Pfizer has had several blockbuster drugs that made them billions.
Drugs That Made Pfizer Billions
Pfizer Inc. is one of the leading research-based healthcare companies in the world. Pfizer organized into four groups:
- Pfizer Pharmaceuticals Group
- Warner-Lambert Consumer Group
- Pfizer Animal Health Group
- Pfizer Global Research and Development
Pfizer sells pharmaceutical products in the United States, Europe, and internationally. The company offers medicines and vaccines in various areas.
Pfizer had several blockbuster drugs with annual revenues exceeding $1 billion. Some examples are:
- Norvasc(hypertension and angina)
- Lipitor(cholesterol reducer)
- Zoloft(anti-depressant)
- Zithromax(oral antibiotic)
- Diflucan(anti-fungal product)
- Viagra(erectile dysfunction)
Pfizer launched the anti-erectile dysfunction drug Viagra in 1998. People hailed it as a "miracle drug." Viagra has been a reliable source of income for 15 years, with sales in the US alone in 2012 of $2bn.
In the 21st Century, Pfizer acquired many other pharmaceutical companies. One company was Warner-Lambert in 2000 for $110bn, followed by Pharmacia in 2003. In 2009, they also bought Wyeth.
Warner-Lambert developed Lipitor, a cholesterol-lowering drug. Lipitor generated a staggering $150.1 billion in sales for Pfizer until 2017.
For the full year 2023, Pfizer reported revenues of $58.5 billion. That was 41% less than when they sold COVID-19 vaccines the previous year.
During the company's existence there have been several scandals.
Pfizer Scandals Through The Years
Pfizer has had many scandals through the years. In 1994, Pfizer agreed to pay $10.75 million to settle a lawsuit. Their mechanical heart valve fractured, resulting in 300 deaths.
By 2012, it had resulted in 663 deaths. The Justice Department claimed that the company lied to get the heart valve approved.
In 1996, during a clinical trial, Pfizer gave an experimental drug to 200 children in Nigeria. But the company never told the parents. Eleven children died. Many others had brain damage and organ failure.
Nigeria's health ministry said that it was an illegal trial of an unregistered drug. Pfizer did not get consent or inform the patients about the experimental drug.
But it didn't end there. Later, Pfizer would pay the largest criminal fine in US history.
Pfizer Paid The Largest Criminal Fine In The US
In 2002, Pfizer paid $49 million to settle allegations by charging too much for Lipitor. Later, the company promoted the epilepsy drug Neurontin for unapproved uses. Pfizer agreed to plead guilty to two felonies and paid $430 million in penalties in 2004.
The company agreed that it marketed the epilepsy drug for unrelated conditions. They said it could treat bipolar disorder, pain, migraine headaches, and alcohol withdrawal.
Pfizer planted company operatives in the audience at medical education events. They also bribed doctors with luxury trips.
In 2009, Pfizer paid the largest criminal fine ever imposed in the United States. They had to pay a $2.3 billion fine. Pfizer pled guilty to misbranding the painkiller Bextra. They promoted the drug to treat acute pain at dosages the FDA had deemed dangerous.

In 2009, Pfizer paid the largest criminal fine ever imposed in the United States by misbranding the painkiller Bextra
The government alleged that Pfizer had paid kickbacks to compliant doctors. Pfizer also promoted other drugs illegally.
The same year, Pfizer paid $750 million to settle 35,000 claims over its drug Rezulin. It was responsible for 63 deaths and dozens of liver failures. FDA officials stood behind the drug despite several deaths. However, Pfizer later removed the drug from the market.
In 2010, Pfizer paid another $142.1 million in damages for their Neurontin drug. Pfizer used fraudulent sales and marketing tricks. It made claims that the FDA disapproved. Neurontin' violated:
- The Racketeer Influenced
- The Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO)
- California's Unfair Competition Law.
Pfizer admitted paying about $20 million to 4,500 medical professionals. They paid them for consulting and speaking on their behalf.
Pfizer also paid $15.3 million to 250 academic medical centers and other research groups. The money went to clinical trials to promote their drugs.
Even after paying the fines, more Pfizer scandals would appear. The company also released a drug that caused breast cancer in women.
Women Got Cancer After Taking Pfizer's Hormone Replacement Therapy Drug
In 2010, Blue Cross Blue Shield filed a lawsuit against Pfizer. They accused the drug company of bribing 5,000 doctors. Pfizer paid for lavish Caribbean vacations, golf games, massages, and other recreational activities. They convinced doctors to use Bextra for off-label uses.
In 2012, the Securities and Exchange Commission charged Pfizer. They claimed Pfizer violated the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA).
Pfizer bribed doctors and other health care professionals employed by foreign governments. They made cash payments and other incentives, so doctors used their products.
In 2012, Pfizer paid $1.2 billion to settle claims by 10,000 women. Pfizer's hormone replacement therapy drug, Prempro, caused breast cancer.
The Prempro settlements came after six years of trials. Pfizer withheld information about the risk of breast cancer from Prempro.
Pfizer also hid information about another drug that caused kidney issues.
Pfizer's Proton Pump Inhibitor Caused Severe Kidney Issues
Protonix is a proton pump inhibitor. In 2013, Pfizer paid $55 million to settle Protonix's criminal charges. Pfizer failed to warn patients and doctors about the risks of various kidney issues.
Pfizer also had to pay another $288 million fine the same year. Their drug, Chantix, caused suicidal thoughts and severe psychological disorders. Chantix also increased the risk of heart attacks.
In 2014, Pfizer paid $35 million to settle a lawsuit for their transplant drug, Rapamune. The company promoted the kidney transplant drug Rapamune for unapproved uses. They bribed doctors to prescribe it to patients by misleading them.
In 2016, Pfizer got a £84.2 million fine for overcharging the NHS for its anti-epilepsy drug. They changed the price of Phenytoin from £2.83 to £67.50 a capsule. The ordeal increased the cost to U.K. taxpayers from £2 million in 2012 to about £50 million in 2013.
The latest Pfizer scandals have to do with COVID-19 vaccines.
COVID-19 Vaccines Had Hidden Side Effects
Many whistleblowers have already come forward, exposing Pfizer's COVID-19 vaccine trials. Pfizer developed its COVID-19 vaccine in partnership with German drugmaker BioNTech.
The vaccine contained a new mRNA technology. Pfizer has attempted to bring it to the market for 50 years. However, they were never able to do so due to side effects.
The company announced that its COVID-19 vaccine was more than 90% effective. The company didn't release any peer-reviewed studies. We have no actual data or long-term results.
Children, adolescents, and other groups were largely excluded from the trials. More than half of Pfizer's trial participants had headaches, muscle pain, and chills. That was the early small phase trials. In phase 3, Pfizer reported that 3.8% experienced grade 3 fatigue and 2% grade 3 headache.
An FDA document revealed that six of 43,448 Pfizer participants died from April 29 to November 14, 2020. Two got the vaccine, and the other four were placebos.
The medical journal BMJ published a report exposing faked data. There were also blind trial failures. Vaccinators didn't get the proper training and reported adverse reactions slowly.
When a whistleblower reported her concerns to the FDA, she got fired the same day. The FDA never inspected the clinical trial site of the whistleblower complaint.
During the trial, a girl got in a wheelchair after getting the jab.
Pfizer Didn't Take Responsibility After Putting A Girl In A Wheelchair
A girl called Maddie de Garay volunteered for the Pfizer trial for 12 to 15-year-olds. Twenty-four hours after her second dose, she was in an emergency room.
She is now in a wheelchair, requiring a feeding tube through her nose. Maddie was one of 1,131 children in Pfizer's clinical trial for children aged 12-15. Pfizer recorded Maddie's adverse event as "abdominal pain" in the clinical trial to the FDA.
The FDA will release the vaccine safety data to the public in 75 years. So, we will never know what's in the vaccine.
Pfizer was hesitant to go into countries without liability protection. This action proves that they don't believe in their product.
Years after the vaccine rollout, Pfizer's vaccine caused aggressive turbo cancers.
COVID-19 Vaccine Caused Aggressive Turbo Cancers
Dr. Chris Flowers is a breast cancer expert from England. He was the volunteer scientific lead of the Pfizer Documents Analysis Project.
Flowers and his colleagues had never seen so much cancer in young people. Pathologists, radiologists, oncologists, and scientists reported similar things. Cancer rates exploded overnight in 2022.
Dowd's report confirms what Flowers and his colleagues have noticed. The cancer rate was two or three times the regular one.
Flowers said young people had what some oncologists now call "turbo cancers." It's a new term describing the extreme growth of cancer.
One day, patients were fine, and the next day, they had terminal cancer. Some even died one week after the diagnosis. Tumors were not only growing faster, but more types of cancer occurred in the same person.
Pfizer skipped 10 years of safety testing. They were aware of the side effects of the mRNA vaccine but released it anyway.
