Essiac tea uses an ancient recipe made by the Ojibwe tribes of Native Americans. A Canadian nurse, Rene Caisse, was the first to use it to help her cancer patients. Essiac is “Caisse” spelled backward.
Caisse began to see remarkable results with her patients.She then wanted to make this elixir available for widespread use. In the 1920s she began working with Dr. Charles Brusch.
Caisse and Dr. Brusch began promoting the use of Essiac tea as an effective cancer treatment. The success of Essiac caught the attention of the mainstream medical industry. They started spreading rumors about health risks associated with consuming Essiac tea.

In 1922, Harry Hoxsey started his first clinic in Taylorville, Illinois. He often got into trouble for practicing medicine without a license.
Around 1924 he went to Chicago to meet with the head of the AMA, Dr. Morris Fishbein. Hoxsey wanted to prove that his formula worked. He got access to a Chicago policeman whose cancer prognosis was terminal.
