Simon: Water is essential to life. You can improve your health and fight cancer better if you become more hydrated. 

In this episode, you're going to learn why our bodies need water. Then you will discover the causes of dehydration and the side effects of not drinking enough water.

After that, I'm going to talk about the pollutants in our drinking water and how you can protect yourself from them. And finally, you will find out ways to hydrate your body.

Simon: Your body consists of about 50 to 75%  water. We need water for various things in our body. Water is part of our digestion,  absorption, circulation, saliva,  and transportation of nutrients. And we also need water to regulate our body temperature.

We need to drink water to maintain a regular bowel movement. Water keeps things flowing in your stomach and prevents constipation. It also makes minerals and nutrients more accessible to the body.

We also need water to transport waste products in and out of the cells. And together with soluble fiber, water is used to form well-formed, soft stools. Water also helps your kidneys remove toxins from your body.

We also need water to cool down our bodies during warm days or after excessive training. Sweating is your body's primary way of getting rid of excess body heat. The amount of sweat that you get rid of depends on your emotional state or physical activity.

Today many people suffer from dehydration. There are several side effects of dehydration, such as weakness, dizziness, palpitations, confusion, sluggishness, headaches, fainting, poor digestion, and other problems.

There are many reasons why we can get dehydrated. One reason is stress. When you're under stress, your adrenal glands pump out stress hormones. They produce a hormone called aldosterone. Adrenal fatigue then leads to dehydration.

Another reason why people get dehydrated is because they don't drink enough water. Many people drink less than six glasses of water per day. Instead, they drink sodas, coffee, caffeinated tea, and alcohol that can damage the body.

 These drinks have a  diuretic effect on the body. When you drink these things, the body needs to get rid of the poisons,  and it does that by excreting them through the urine.

One popular drink that many people consume per day is soda. Did you know that one can of soda contains about ten teaspoons of sugar? Another problem is phosphoric acid, which interferes with the body's ability to absorb calcium.

If you believe that drinking diet sodas will improve your condition, then you're wrong. Diet sodas can be worse than regular sodas. These sodas contain aspartame instead of sugar. Aspartame is behind almost 100 different health problems, including brain tumors and diabetes.

Some sodas also contain high-fructose corn syrup, which is another sweetener common in sodas. It's a sweetener produced from corn, and most of the corn comes from GMOs.  So if you look at the nutritional value of soda, it has no nutrients and is extremely acidic,  and bad for our teeth.

Alcohol is another problem in today's society. Alcohol has a detrimental effect on our bodies. Every time you drink alcohol, your liver needs to get rid of the toxins. And if you drink too much, the liver can become inflamed, and that can cause liver failure and death.

Excessive alcohol can scar and damage the liver and also increase the risk of liver cancer. Long-term drinking can also result in brain damage and dependence on alcohol. The headache that you  get after a hangover is a sign that you're dehydrated.

There are other ways we can become dehydrated. One source is the food that we eat. Every time you consume things like meat, hot spices, chocolate, a lot of salt, sugar, or when you smoke tobacco or use artificial sweeteners, then that can lead to more dehydration.

You can also become dehydrated when you have diarrhea. Diarrhea prevents your intestinal tract from absorbing water from the foods that you eat.

Prescription drugs can also cause dehydration in your body. The most problematic drug is blood pressure medicine. It's the major cause of dehydration from prescription drugs.

Every time you exercise, your body needs to cool down,  and that's a common reason why we lose a lot of water.

And when it's hot outside, you have to make sure to drink enough water. One time I played soccer with my friends, and we didn't bring that much water with us. And eventually, everyone got a headache after the game.

Another problem with the water that we drink today is pollution. The water that we drink today is not as good as our ancestors drank. They got access to spring water or water from the lake. But when more people moved to the cities, we had to share the same water.

So, at the beginning of the industrial revolution, we didn't know how to clean the water. Many people drank toxic water and became sick.

But eventually, we created wastewater treatment plants. But pollutants such as heavy metals and chemical compounds are hard to remove from the water.

In some countries, they also add fluoride to the water. One example is America. More people drink fluoridated water in the United States alone than the rest of the world combined.  

The fluoride that we have in our toothpaste and our water is sodium fluoride. It's a toxic waste product from the aluminum and fertilizer industry. It's a substance that doesn't occur in nature and has a damaging effect on living organisms.

The man responsible for adding fluoride to the municipal water in America was Francis Frary. And his reason was that fluoride could improve dental health.

So his deception created a multi-billion dollar industry out of a  worthless toxic by-product. The fertilizer and aluminum industry now had a secondary income from a waste product that was hard to remove.

It's complicated to get rid of fluoride in a safe way. So by dumping fluoride in the drinking water, they don't have to deal with environmental problems.

If you look at Europe, they don't have worse teeth than America. Adding fluoride to the water doesn't approve dental health.

And even if fluoride could improve your dental health, it's very ineffective to put it in the drinking water because people use the water for other reasons than drinking it, such as doing the dishes, taking a shower, or cleaning their car.

The fluoride that the US government adds to the drinking water is extremely corrosive and can go through concrete. One time there was a fluoride leakage at the Rock Island water treatment plant.

And the fluoride was actually eating holes in the concrete. I'm going to play a clip from a news report where a truck leaked fluoride.

News reporters: Responding to a chemical leak this afternoon in Rock Island. The chemical was so strong it was burning through the concrete there. News aid Christine Mergenthal has the latest.

It was just before one o'clock Thursday afternoon when hazmat crews were called to the Rock Island water treatment plant for a chemical spill coming from this tanker truck.

The chemical hydrofluorosilicic acid is used to add fluoride to the plant's water. After several hours, crews were able to clean up the leak, allowing operations to return to normal.

They had to close off the area, obviously, but as far as the treatment of the water and the amount of water being used by the public, there is no effect on that at all.

Now, that acid that did spill out is a chemical that they actually use every single day here at the water treatment plant. It adds fluoride to the water.

Simon: So, in this case,  fluoride is toxic and dangerous on the concrete. But when you put it into the water, then all of a sudden it's safe.

There's no health reason why we should put fluoride in the water. The only conclusion that you can make is that the US government and other countries that add fluoride to the water want to sabotage people's health.

Fluoride has many bad effects on the body. It can accumulate in the bones and cause a bone disease called skeletal fluorosis.

Fluoride has also caused bone cancer, liver cancer, and other types of physical ailments in rats. It has also shown to create dementia,  bone fractures, and other issues.

Fluoride is not the only toxin added to the water. In some countries, they add chlorine to the water supply. Chlorine is a yellow-green gas that has a strong odor.

So soldiers during the first world war used it as a chemical weapon. But today, we use it to disinfect everything from tap water to industrial waste and swimming pools.

The main reason for adding chlorine to the water is to kill pathogens. Chlorine is not safe or effective. But most governments use it because of its low price. The by-products of chlorine are the most toxic. They can cause cancer and also affect our immune system.

So chlorine can also cause skin rashes, headaches, and other problems. My mother likes to swim, and she told me that when she swims in chlorinated water, her swimsuit gets destroyed. But it doesn't happen when she swims in the lake.

My dad told me when he went to Israel. He didn't know that they added chlorine to the water. So when he drank it, he became ill and had diarrhea.

When I grew up, I often visited my grandparents in northern Sweden. They got their water from the well. But the problem was that the water had a lot of iron. And when I used the toilet, it was completely dark.

And when we sent a sample of the water to a laboratory, they told us that it was not capable of sustaining life. And I remember one time when I only had one bowel movement the whole week,

Another time I visited a Vipassana workshop. For ten days, we meditated for ten hours per day. The workshop site had very bad water with a lot of iron.

And I had problems with diarrhea the whole week. But eventually, I found out that you could boil the water, and my symptoms disappeared.

So the best way to consume water is spring water. I remember one time when I went to the Swedish mountains, and I drank the water from the mountains. And it was the best water I'd ever tasted,  and I felt so much better than the water I drank in the city.

So if you can, try to drink spring water. But if that's not possible, then you should buy a water purification system. My favorite brand is Berkey. It can remove heavy metals, pharmaceutical drugs, rust, and more.

The Berkey has two sections.   In the upper section, you have two black filters where you add the water. And then the water goes down to the section below.

The Berkey is gravity fed and can filter about 6,000 gallons of water before you need to replace the filters. You can also buy an extra filter for your Berkey if you want to remove fluoride.

So there are different ways you can prevent dehydration. The first tip is that you should have a water bottle ready every day that you can drink from. So this bottle should be made of stainless steel or glass. Avoid using plastic bottles that contain toxic BPA.

In order for you to know if you're dehydrated,  you should look at your urine. If your urine is dark yellow, then it means that you should drink more water. And if your urine looks like water, then you need to drink less.

Another way to prevent dehydration is to eat more vegetables and fruits that contain a lot of water, such as watermelon, cucumbers, and oranges.

I remember one time when I was a kid and visited a zoo, and I didn't bring water with me. But luckily, I had some grapes that I ate, and my dehydration disappeared.  

So make sure to eat more vegetables and fruits throughout the day. And you should also drink about six to eight cups of water every day. But you might drink some more water if you're exercising or it's warm outside.

You should also avoid consuming meat, processed foods, sodas, coffee, black tea, alcohol, excess salt, chocolate, sugar, tobacco, narcotic drugs, and artificial sweeteners. If you do that, then your risk of getting dehydrated will lessen.
